Leading Electronics Manufacturer Transforms Logistics with Smart Scanning
Challenge
Legacy industrial PDAs suffered from frequent barcode recognition failures, particularly with wrapped or damaged codes. Annual PDA replacement and maintenance costs exceeded hundreds of thousands of dollars, and WiFi-based network instability created operational bottlenecks.
Solution
Replaced 700+ industrial PDAs with consumer-grade smartphones running SCANDIT SDK (Advanced Edition). Integrated the SDK into existing mobile WMS/TMS applications to enable wrapped barcode scanning, multi-scan, and long-range scanning. Migrated to LTE connectivity for network stability and leveraged smartphone insurance for streamlined maintenance.
The key to this transformation was a dedicated project champion embedded in field operations — someone with deep frontline experience and a drive for process improvement who led the initiative from planning through evaluation and enterprise-wide buy-in.
Before selecting a solution, the team benchmarked approximately 28 open-source and commercial scanning solutions. SCANDIT demonstrated overwhelming superiority in recognition speed, accuracy, and advanced capabilities including AI and AR features.
Building on proven results, the organization is planning expansion to overseas logistics centers, new warehouses, and service materials management. Testing is also underway to mount smartphones on conveyor belts as a potential replacement for dedicated automation equipment.
