Introduction
Yamato Transport is Japan's leading logistics company. In June 2020, the company launched EAZY, a delivery service for e-commerce businesses offering various receiving methods including face-to-face, contactless, and delivery box options. Major e-commerce platforms including Amazon and Mercari have adopted the service. By integrating Scandit SDK into delivery partners' smartphones, Yamato achieved dedicated scanner-level performance through software alone.

Challenge
When Yamato Transport launched its e-commerce delivery service EAZY in June 2020, delivery partners were given smartphones instead of dedicated scanners. However, waybill barcodes were often poorly printed — blurred or with missing lines — requiring multiple scan attempts. QR codes on reflective smartphone screens caused frequent recognition errors due to light glare and scratches. Scanning in low-light and nighttime conditions was also problematic, and the solution needed to match the performance of dedicated scanning devices.
Solution
Yamato Transport integrated Scandit Barcode Scanner SDK into two applications. First, the EAZY delivery app used by delivery partners to scan package barcodes for destination and route confirmation. Second, the Nekore app deployed across 70 terminals throughout Japan for managing parcel loading and unloading on delivery vehicles. Scandit's AI-powered recognition technology ensures reliable scanning of damaged barcodes, QR codes on reflective screens, and in low-light environments.
Why SCANDIT
In the delivery field, barcode scanning is an essential task that determines the next action for every delivery — destination, route, and customer verification all depend on it. Scandit proved reliable in the demanding conditions of parcel delivery: poorly printed barcodes, QR codes on reflective screens, and nighttime environments. It was the only software solution capable of fully replacing dedicated scanning hardware.
"In the field of delivery, the destination and route are determined based on the package information linked to the barcode. Barcode scanning is an essential task for delivery personnel to decide their next action. The speed of reading and the accuracy are important, due to the demand for short processing times."
— Yoshihiro Hatano, Executive Officer, System General Manager of Transportation & Delivery Operations, Yamato Transport
Impact
After deploying Scandit, Yamato Transport's EAZY service reliably processes up to 300 scans per person per day across 9,000 delivery partners using smartphones. The Nekore vehicle management app across 70 terminals also resolved damaged barcode and reflective QR code recognition issues, significantly improving efficiency across the entire delivery process.
